Temperature Monitoring for Human Cell & Tissue Products: What is required?

Human tissue is a valuable commodity, but even with the best storage equipment and communication infrastructure, power and network interruptions can leave irreplaceable tissues vulnerable.

To protect HCT/ps (Human Cell & Tissue Products) against loss or degradation, continuous monitoring and alarming can ensure fast response to equipment failure and fail-safe recording will ensure accreditation needs are met.

Veriteq's monitoring, alarming and reporting system ensures tissue temperature records are always complete and accurate. Unlike other monitoring systems, viewLinc™ is immune to network or power outages because data is recorded in three ways: in each sensor, on the host PC and in scheduled file backups.

Transplant Tissue Standards & Lab Accreditation

The AATB’s Standards for Tissue Banking, which are applicable to AATB-accredited tissue banks, require continuous recording of the tissue storage temperatures for controlled environments (but not for ambient temps and colder if the musculoskeletal tissue is lyophilized as these are temperature stable).

The Joint Commission's Standards Improvement Initiative (SII) has been created to clarify the language of JC standards, make standards program-specific, eliminate redundant or non-essential standards, and consolidate similar standards.

The JC SII Laboratory Accreditation Program has released a pre-publication version of their "Transplant Safety Lab Accreditation Requirements" outlining temperature monitoring and recording requirements for transplant tissue.

These requirements will be effective January 1, 2010.
