Synopsis:

This peer-reviewed article published in the Journal of Validation Technology explains where thermistor-based mapping equipment and thermocouple-based equipment are used for optimal accuracy and efficiency. Knowing where it is appropriate to use thermistor sensors in regulated applications can allow users to eliminate many pre- and post-calibrations.

As outlined in the article, the evidence that stable thermistor sensors can be used for accurate thermal validation came from calibrations performed on 2,427 Vaisala Veriteq temperature data loggers that had been in field use for 10 to 14 months. Among these devices, 99.7% were returned for calibration well within the original accuracy specifications. Of the eight that were found Out of Specification (OOS), none were out by more than 0.12ºC, and the average OOS value was 0.036ºC.

These results indicate that the Vaisala Veriteq Validation System allows users to forgo pre- and post-calibrations with confidence. The stability of the sensors allows for a more efficient and accurate validation method. In addition, the reduced set-up and deployment time of the system, along with little or no operational downtime that normally accompanies validating with thermocouple-based systems, reduces many of the high costs associated with validation..
