New Excitation Switch for Transducer Data Logging

Nov 16, 1999 - Veriteq has introduced a new Excitation Power Switch (XPS) on select Spectrum 4000 current loop data loggers.

The XPS switch has been designed to allow customers to collect data using their own 4-20mA transducers in remote field applications where no power outlets are available, says Rick Schellenberg, Veriteq's marketing manager. Schellenberg adds that using the XPS switch can extend battery life up to 200 times for typical data logging applications, making it ideal for extended monitoring sessions.

"Many of our customers have a need to gather information in remote field applications using their own transducers", says Schellenberg. "Unfortunately, the transducers typically draw so much power that they make small battery-powered setups impractical." As a result, many customers are forced to consider manual methods of data collection, limit their data logging to very short monitoring periods, or be faced with high costs in providing special power solutions.

The XPS feature works by shutting down the power to the transducer between data logger readings while allowing a user-selectable time for the transducer to warm up and stabilize. The switching operation means that a data logger recording every thirty minutes can, for example, monitor periods up to four months with a transducer power-up time of just sixteen hours. Schellenberg points out that this allows customers to use smaller batteries yet still be able to reliably record extended periods out in the field.

The XPS is ideal for remote applications such as pipe pressure and flow monitoring, environmental studies, or any application where a convenient power source cannot be assured. The feature allows customers to choose a transducer that exactly matches their application, then package it with a data logger and a small battery to produce a completely self-contained and stand-alone monitoring package.

The XPS feature is available on Spectrum 4000, 4000-1CW and 4000-2CW models.
